MSA AGM 2026: Celebrating Growth and Community with a New Tradition

MSA AGM 2026: Celebrating Growth and Community with a New Tradition
On March 29th, the MEXT Scholars Association (MSA) gathered for its Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2026—an event that not only marked a pivotal moment for the organization’s governance but also signaled a beautiful evolution in its history. Historically held in August, this year’s AGM was moved to March, coinciding with Japan’s iconic hanami (cherry blossom) season. This shift was more than just a change in the calendar; it was a homecoming. Discovering that MSA’s founding roots trace back to April, the event served as a vibrant "birthday celebration" for one of the largest and most stable international student networks in Japan.

Strength in Numbers, Strength in Service
The 2026 AGM saw a remarkable turnout, bringing together over 36+ MEXT scholarship students who have stepped up as core team members, regular participants and partners. The hall was a testament to the diverse ecosystem that supports the international community in Japan. The choice of venue was as impactful as the event itself. Held at the Ritsumeikan University Tokyo Campus. Distinguished guests from various embassies, sponsors, and a robust lineup of partners—including JAPI, JTAF and numerous NGO partners like Leave a Nest Co., Ltd., JPort by SPeak Corp, ASEAN, Sociarise, CMC—were in attendance.
The success of the day was underpinned by the dedication of MSA’s volunteers. From technical support and stage management to guest relations and food coordination, the smooth execution of the program was a direct result of the leadership and people-management skills being cultivated within the student core team.

Program Highlights: Recognition and Vision
The official program, which started at 1:00 PM, offered a comprehensive look at MSA’s impact and future vision:
- Strategic Insights: The afternoon featured an introduction by JAPI and a detailed MSA presentation and Q&A session. This provided transparency into the association’s operations and allowed for direct engagement with the student body.
- Partner Acknowledgments: A dedicated segment for officials and NGO partners highlighted the collaborative spirit that keeps MSA thriving.
- Certification Ceremony: A key highlight of the event was the certification ceremony, recognizing the hard work and contributions of members who have dedicated their time to the growth of the community.

Bridging Gaps and Building Futures
As the formal session transitioned into a networking hour at 3:00 PM, the atmosphere shifted from professional to personal. For many, including the leadership team, this was the first opportunity to meet new partners and collaborators in person.
The 2026 AGM was more than just a formal gathering; it was a celebration of mutual gratitude and the "giving spirit" that defines our community. This year, we moved beyond the traditional distribution of MSA swag to include a formal recognition of the incredible efforts of our volunteer team. In a particularly proud moment for the organization, our esteemed sponsors were invited to personally hand out certificates of appreciation to our MSA volunteers, bridging the gap between established professional leaders and the next generation of international talent. This spirit of appreciation flowed seamlessly into the networking session, where, amidst refreshments and snacks, the room buzzed with the energy of new connections. It was a wonderful reminder that while we provide the snacks and the space, it is the students and partners themselves who build the lasting bonds that strengthen the international community in Japan.
The day concluded with a group photo at 4:30 PM, followed by a lavish dinner. This post-event gathering was where the real "heart" of MSA was on display. Away from scripts and schedules, members and partners shared stories of their daily lives, their personal struggles, and their shared commitment to resolving the unique challenges faced by international students in Japan.

Reflecting on the MSA Legacy
As we look back on the AGM 2026, the sense of pride is palpable. MSA has solidified its position as a cornerstone of the international community in Japan. By shifting our traditions to align with our origins, we haven't just celebrated a "birthday"—we have reaffirmed our commitment to being a community of givers and providers.
To our team, our volunteers, and our partners: thank you for being the strength of this society. Together, we continue to build a network that is not only stable but also deeply connected to the human experience of every MEXT scholar in Japan.
